In a time when our nation—and the social fabric of the District—is experiencing deep division, artists are turning to collage as a democratic strategy to give platform to stories of rupture, repair, and reassembly. Rip! Tear! Collage as Critique calls on 23 DC-based artists who use collage as a conceptual approach to reconciling the fractured, fast-paced, and often contradictory stories and symbols of American history and modern life. The collected works stray from conventional approaches to paper collage, employing methods such as assemblage, quilting, bricolage, video, and photomontage that knowingly upset the boundaries of the genre.

A Passage of Force Through Matter asserts the ongoing vibrancy of painting within contemporary art and considers the role it can play in navigating and destabilizing our overburdened image landscape. Featuring work in both abstract and representational modes, the exhibition considers abstraction as a method of working, rather than as a descriptor to be assigned to an individual artwork. It frames abstraction as an approach that artists use to reconcile and transcend their own experiences of the visual world–both the physical world and the endless scroll of news images, selfies, digitally-generated content, and, increasingly, AI generated material that fill our various screens. The exhibition’s title is borrowed from art historian David Joselit, who described the painterly mark as “a passage of force through matter” in his essay for the 2016 exhibition Painting 2.0.

Greater Reston Arts Center (GRACE) is pleased to announce that artists Rahne Alexander, Matthew Mann, Omolara Williams McCallister, Zia Palmer, and Mojdeh Rezaeipour have been selected to participate in the biannual Mary B. Howard Invitational: An Excellent Thought About a Quality Idea. The selected artists will present a new project referencing an artwork they have created in the past (a previous “quality idea” for which they now have an “excellent thought” on how it may be reimagined or redeveloped.
In alignment with the ‘sindikit project’s commitment to supporting studio research and experimentation with an emphasis on gender, sexuality, and race, artists were invited to submit a proposal for the exhibition using the title, An Excellent Thought About a Quality Idea, as a prompt. The artists will have investigated, explored, and developed concepts, receiving feedback from the Guest Curators along the way, to culminate into new work to be presented in the exhibition at GRACE.
THIS EXHIBITION IS POSTPONED DUE TO COVID-19. STAY TUNED FOR RESCHEDHULING.

Matthew Mann
Sept. 15 - Oct. 27, 2018
Opening Reception Sat. Sept. 15, 6.30 -- 8.30pm
Twee Brutalism: In Situ brings together paintings, drawings and mixed media works on paper that consider the use of aesthetic and cultural touchstones in the marketplace of urban redevelopment, lifestyle branding, luxury goods and cultural production itself. With bold colors and what the artist describes as “disjointed horizons, incised images, and improbably organized topographies”, Matthew Mann’s positions as an artist and a citizen are visually, intuitively, and delightfully stated.
In this solo show at WAS gallery, one finds an eclectic array of subjects and references that reflect Mann's preoccupations as an artist. Brutalist architecture, 19th century wallpaper, minimalist artworks, commercial photography and punk ephemera are all deployed here, with their uses and intent humorously undermined. By reframing these subjects as appliances, decorations, toys, and confections, Mann not only questions the value society places on aesthetic objects and spaces but also explores the role of art within retail and lifestyle marketing contexts.
